Objectives
The objectives of the Committee are to actively:
- Foster an understanding of the nature and significance of cultural tourism in sustaining cultural heritage within communities
- Raise awareness of, and sensitivity to, the significant political, social and economic impacts and opportunities of cultural tourism
- Promote the ICOMOS International Guidelines on Cultural Tourism throughout the UK. In particular, the Committee seeks to demonstrate the importance of the guidelines within government departments and local authorities; public, private and third sector organisations; and professional associations concerned with tourism
- Identify and promote best practice within tourism and conservation education and training programmes in partnership with ICOMOS-UK Education and Training Committee
- Create a dynamic forum to encourage debate on current issues in cultural tourism throughout the UK in the context of the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee.
Strengths
The Committee gains strength from:
- Active links with other relevant organisations in the UK
- The International Guidelines on Cultural Tourism
- ICOMOS-UK’s role as a UK wide organisation, not specific to England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland
- The Committee’s ties with the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee (ICTC), and from collaborative international expertise and experience
- The wide knowledge and professional experience of Committee members, previous activities, published works, seminars and conferences
