    Cultural Landscape Management Conference – June 2008

Objectives:

The Committee will in regard to cultural landscapes and historic park and gardens:

  • Take a particular interest in the cultural landscape dimension to World Heritage sites and in defining, where appropriate, and promoting cultural landscapes and historic park and gardens as World Heritage sites commencing with a Lake District nomination
  • Intervene in case work which either affects World Heritage sites with a cultural landscapes and historic park and gardens dimension or which would set precedents or create policies and approaches which could affect cultural landscapes and historic park and gardens generally
  • Raise awareness and understanding of their relevance and significance, including by means of conferences and papers, as an integral part of the historic environment both in urban and rural areas and among both rural and urban communities
  • Develop and promote good practice in their recognition and care both in the UK and abroad
    Work to ensure they are sustainable – economically, socially, environmentally and culturally – elements of the historic environment
  • Instigate education and training programmes aimed at promoting appreciation, understanding and practical management ability among both professionals and all sectors of society
  • Ensure adequate research and recording is undertaken
  • Involve itself in the effect of current design on these landscapes, parks and gardens ensuring such design appreciates and doesn’t undermine their significance and historic integrity
  • Champion recreation and access as an element to their enjoyment and understanding
  • Devise conservation ethics and philosophies that can guide all aspects to their management and development including defining the cultural qualities in landscape
  • Make an input in all ICOMOS charters and related documents to ensure they are relevant to the Committee’s concerns
  • Initiate principles, policies and practices in all UK bodies, especially the Government bodies, whose work effects cultural landscapes and historic park and gardens
  • Promote its work through the ICOMOS International Committee for Cultural Landscapes and Historic Parks – making recommendations on full and corresponding members; other relevant international committees and other ICOMOS-UK committees
  • Undertake fundraising that will allow it to better promote its objectives
  • Create links with like-minded individuals and bodies

Strengths:

The Committee gains strength from:

  • The breadth of its membership covering all aspects of the work it covers, representing both the public and the private sectors and the different countries of the UK
  • Its link with other ICOMOS national Committees
  • Its relationship, often through membership (as with the ICOMOS International Committee for Cultural Landscapes and Historic Parks) with related international committees
  • Its links with the various Government and non-Government bodies in the UK concerned with the committee’s area of work
  • Its participation in international events and its working experience of the cultural landscapes and historic park and gardens outside the UK
