ICOMOS-UK (formed in 1965) is the UK Committee of ICOMOS, the International Council on Monuments and Sites. ICOMOS-UK is an independent charity with a UK-wide and international mission to promote and support best practice in the conservation, care and understanding of the historic environment.

Much of our work is undertaken by our individual and institutional members who come from a wide range of backgrounds including architecture, planning, landscape design, and the heritage, archaeology, conservation, academic and tourism sectors.

ICOMOS (International) has a special responsibility to UNESCO as an official adviser on cultural World Heritage Sites and ICOMOS-UK plays an essential role in advising on aspects of World Heritage and sites for nomination across the UK.

ICOMOS

ICOMOS was founded in 1965 in Warsaw, Poland. Its foundation was inspired by the 1964 Venice International Charter on the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites. More commonly known as the Venice Charter, this still remains a benchmark for the world’s conservation community. ICOMOS Committees have now been set up in more than 110 countries. ICOMOS (International) is based in Paris.

ICOMOS is concerned with furthering the conservation, protection, rehabilitation and enhancement of monuments, groups of buildings and sites, at the national and the international level. Through over 110 national committees, and more than 7,000 members worldwide, it provides a forum for professional dialogue. ICOMOS has special responsibility as adviser to UNESCO on cultural World Heritage sites.
