“Thank God I have the seeing eye, that is to say, as I lie in bed I can walk step by step on the fells and rough land seeing every stone and flower and patch of bog and cotton pass where my old legs will never take me again.”
(Beatrix Potter (1866-1943))

ICOMOS-UK held its Summer Conference this year at the University of Cumbria at Ambleside, Lake District from 12-14 June 2008. The Annual ICOMOS-UK AGM also took place during the conference. The conference was organised in collaboration with the University of Cumbria.
With speakers from Italy, France, Norway, Switzerland and Hungary, as well as the UK, the conference aimed to draw together thinking and practice on how the forces that shape cultural landscapes can be sustained and harnessed to deliver positive benefits and contribute to sustainable development and regeneration.
There was a strong focus on the Lake District with a range of highly informative and enjoyable site visits complemented by speakers addressing the multiple values of the Lake District landscape, particularly in the context of the Lake District World Heritage Project.
Selected Summary Proceedings
The following Selected Summary Proceedings give a flavour of the conference themes, particularly in relation to comparing international experiences across Europe and in the context of World Heritage. These are simple notes, taken by Tehmina Goskar, which are only intended to provide a basic record of the conference ideas; if some key points have been omitted, please leave a comment.
